5th of June – the first day of sun since I arrived in Germany more than a week ago – but the blue sky is only hiding a far more murkier truth – Dresden and most towns and villages along the river are severely threatened by the rising of our local river the Elbe.
Whilst the officials now say it will not be as high as the last big flood of 2002 – it will still get close – and close is bad enough. The town of Meissen (just 15minutes downstream) is already flooded – so are the small towns in Saxon Switzerland.
Some lower lying suburbs of Dresden are also “land under” but we all think that the historic old town will dodge the bullet this time – thanks also to the newly built flood defenses.
I have been doing the “flood tourist” thing – took some photos on Monday the 3rd and also just now – and can show you in what short time span the water has risen.
